Metal Work is an Italian company specialized in the production of pneumatic components for automation systems. Founded in 1967, Metal Work started as a small workshop manufacturing push-in connections for compressed air systems. Since then, the company has gradually expanded its structure and production range to become the market leader in pneumatic components for automation systems.
All pneumatic systems use compressed air to operate and move parts or actuators. These systems, like pneumatic valves, range from simple air-powered pistons to multiple actuator mining operations. They often use compressed atmospheric air because of its abundance and low cost. Due to their ease of use, silence and economy, they are generally preferred over hydraulic systems that use liquids.
Here are the common parts of a pneumatic system:
Retention valves
They are one-way valves installed in the hose, which connects the compressor to the buffer tank. They allow compressed air to build up in the buffer tanks, but prevent backflow into the compressor tank.
Compressor
It is a mechanical device that increases air pressure by reducing its volume. This is a gas or electricity powered pump. It compresses air to a higher PSI (pounds per square inch). Compressors have an attached tank to store the air before it is released into the pneumatic track. An air compressor is a specific type of gas compressor.
Regulators and Meters
These are equipment that are connected to the compressor or compressor tank. To release air in the pneumatic track, the regulator is electrically or mechanically actuated. Meters are also electrical or mechanical measuring instruments. They allow the computer system or operator to regulate and check the PSI of the air inside the compressor.
Accumulator or buffer tank
Buffer tanks are secondary storage units for the compressed air that came from the compressor. They are storing high PSI compressed air for the pneumatic actuators. These tanks help prevent irregular airflow surges at the actuators, allowing the compressor to cycle to maximize its shutdown time. They also allow the compressor to be at the exact distance from actuators on projects.
Power lines
They are hoses that move pressurized air through the pneumatic system. Larger diameter hoses are installed to handle the PSI. These large hoses allow pressurized air to travel faster, eliminating airflow backups.
Actuators
These are the pneumatic system components that do the heavy lifting. Many types of actuators are powered by pressurized air. The most used are scuba and diving. Pressurized air is released into the cylinder to make the piston move forward while air is forced into the chamber.
